The Tourism Rally got under way in Sigulda on the 1st of March, commencing the diverse programme of artistic and sports events of the Winter Festival IV. Seventy people turned out for a winter swimming event in Roķēni, and even more people to watch them brave the cold water or walk a tightrope over an ice hole.

The Meteņi festival, traditionally held to say goodbye to winter and welcome the arrival of spring, was celebrated in several parishes in the Sigulda Region and in the Turaida Museum Reserve. The celebrations were attended by lots of festival goers from near and far: Sigulda, Līvāni, Riga, Krimulda, as well as the “Active Citizenship for a Stronger Europe” participants from Finland, Estonia, Germany and Italy.

In the evening, the official opening ceremony for the Winter Festival was held at the Sigulda Railway Station. To the virtuoso marimba roll by Rihards Zaļupe, Sigulda Olympians and members from the Aerodium Flying School raised the festival’s flag to proudly fly atop the mast.

Do not stand by – come and enjoy the Winter Festival in Sigulda that will continue up until the 9th of March!
