One of the most prominent cultural events of the year took place at the Latvian National Opera on the 7th of November – a concert by the outstanding Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, which marked the 100th birthday of the conductor’s father – the legendary Latvian conductor Arvīds Jansons. The programme of the concert included the popular Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” by Antonín Dvořák, inspired by Native American and African melodies, and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor – the premiere of the symphony in 1937 was a phenomenal success.
