400 volunteers involved in Latvian Song and Dance Festival
Volunteers joined all biggest events of the Festival: opening of Song and Dance Festival, choir contest, song and dance concerts, the fair, large-scale dance concert, the singalong. Many of them worked at the information centre and helped foreign collectives to fit in Riga. A great number of volunteers worked at Song and Dance Festival closing concert "Līgo" and participants' walk.
"Rīga 2014" foundation office became the centre of volunteers during the Festival. Thus, jobs were coordinated from there, also volunteers identification cards and bright yellow T-shirts were handed out in order to identify volunteers.
Volunteer applications and training for the organisation were held from April, 2013. Volunteers first met at The Great Stage of Mežaparks joining in a united volunteers choir and recording the Festival logotype.
Various lodgings for the night were offered in schools for volunteers from regions such as Daugavpils, Liepaja and other Latvian districts. Therefore, they were able to feel themselves as a singificant part of Song and Dance Festival. The oldest volunteer was Marģers (74) who worked at Mežaparks. He once was a participant of Song and Dance Festival.
Song and Dance Festival volunteers will be able to join The European Capital of Culture events including World Choir Games (WCG), the greatest singalong event for choirs, bringing together 20 000 singers from the whole world. WCG will be held in Riga, 2014.
Volunteering work during Song and Dance Festival was organised by "Rīga 2014" foundation and the Latvian National Culture Centre.
