This year, the creative conception of the annual „Staro Rīga” Festival is titled „Six stories of joy” which introduces the main idea - six thematic lines- for next year’s European Capital of Culture.

The central route for the festival will be from Daugava river up to Jugla District with several branches in Old Town, Esplanāde, Miera Street and VEF Culture Palace as well as Teika Secondary School and Strazdumuiža.

„A part of the objects registered for the festival will be presented during the upcoming events. Also other creative ideas will be shown at the opening weekend of European Capital of Culture from 17 to 19 January when „Staro Rīga” special edition will be held,” told Diāna Čivle, Head of „Rīga 2014” Foundation.

During the festival, more than 30 lighting objects will be shown in the urban environment, each of them representing European Capital of Culture. At Dome Square, interactive objects „Tu un Tagad” („You and Now”) will reveal the main ideas of European Capital of Culture, but a special staging of „Aerodium” will be offered at Square of Latvian Riflemen which was shown frequently outside Latvia, but in Riga this will be the first performance. This splendid show will represent the great skills of professionals who are creating a special light tunnel where there will be a possibility to fly 15 metres up while holding Latvian flag.

Organizers of „Staro Rīga” Festival are glad that the higher state institutions have agreed to join the festival activities. In that way, a poetry of Ojārs Vācietis will be revealed on the facade of the Parliament building where 95 stories about freedom will be expressed through light, sound and video. Also the local residents have taken part in creating this project. The main building of University of Latvia will be used as a lighting background to „tell” a story of knowledges and skills important for a human’s survival through time.

Many lighting objects will „freshen up” the facade and will also „invite” people to come inside the building.

A new exhibition hall will be opened during this festival – „Atklāj Rīgu” („Explore Riga”). But chocolate factory „Laima” with its everlasting aroma of coffee beans will offer various interesting stories to their guests.

Every cultural activity gets even more significant as soon as local people get involved, this is the leading idea for „Rīga 2014” programme, so various lighting objects will be interactive. In that way, guests of „Staro Rīga” will be able to sing, try the profession of conductor or modelling for a magazine. The biggest Latvian flag will be presented in Mežaparks, also various Latvian ornaments will be illuminated, and everyone who wishes will be able to take part in creating the outline of Latvia state made from candles.

„Staro Rīga” will be held four evenings from 15 to 18 November where lighting objects from the competition and collaboration programmes will be shown as well as various foreign art pieces included in the international cooperation projects in Riga. One of these will be illuminated on the facade of VEF cultural palace, the artwork made in cooperation with Portuguese artists. It will be an emotional children’s story about a fantasy world and a voyage to the sea.

„Staro Rīga” Festival is one of the most popular events in cultural life of the capital city. It includes exhibitions of urban environment objects where the traditional city landscape changes by using contemporary light and video technologies. Apart from the festival offer, various stores, offices and other public places are now using light objects in their design on a daily basis allowing visitors to evaluate the beautiful lighting details on the darkest hours as well.
