“Rīga 2014” programme: Midsummer, Flower ball, craftsman workshops
Rīga2014 . This Summer’s program includes several solstice events that will take place at different locations, like the Mažaparks Grand Stage and Turaida.
One should not worry about the lack of traditional events in the “Rīga 2014” programme – the Midsummer or Līgo! celebrations should be especially noted, which this year will take place at the Mažaparks Grand Stage, as well as - traditionally - in Turaida, at Jāņakalns. The annual „Ball of Flowers in Riga”, loved by locals and visitors of the city, will take place as well.

 

* Craftsman workshop “Tilts” 

The craftsman workshop “Tilts” (Bridge) will consist of many parts:

7 – 10 May: woodworking week;

14 – 17 May: pottery week (opening and stoking of the kiln on 16 and 17 May);

21 – 24 May: game, toy and musical instrument week;

28 – 31 May: handicraft week.

* Midsummer night Jāņi mistery “Rise, sun!”

Mažaparks Grand Stage, 21 June

As part of the “European Solstice” event, the Midsummer night Jāņi mistery, which, reaching into our nation’s most ancient traditions, is very much a live and up-to-date ritual. The event “Dance through Jāņi night” will take place during the traditional Summer solice celebration time, featuring Latvia’s best folk dancing groups, youth choirs, folk groups, soloists and other musicians.

* European Solstice

Mažaparks Grand Stage territory, 21 – 22 June​

Representatives of different countries (choirs, dance groups, etc.) will take part in the “European Solstice” event, who will portray the solstice traditions of their countries. Bands from Tartu, Tallinn, Rostock, Hamburg, Kaunas, Vilnius, Veliky Novgorod, Norrköping and Bremen have already confirmed their participation in the event. The already vast programme of events will be expanded by the solstice fair.

* Midsummer night Jāņi mistery “Rise, sun!”

Mažaparks Grand Stage, 22 June

As part of the “European Solstice” event, the Midsummer night Jāņi mistery, which, reaching into our nation’s most ancient traditions, is very much a live and up-to-date ritual. The event “Dance through Jāņi night” will take place during the traditional Summer solstice celebration time, featuring Latvia’s best folk dancing groups, youth choirs, folk groups, soloists and other musicians – all together 2500 participants.

* “We’ll bind our land with the folk belt”  

Turaida, Janis Hill, 21 June, starting from 17.00 pm

Summer solstice in Sigulda will be celebrated together with the folk-group “Senleja”. The Eve of grasses will be hallowed in songs, the groups “Dandari” and “Iļģi” will make your feet dance all night through. The evening will be made more colorful by fire men Eduards and Audars Klints, Indra Čekstere will teach you the language of the flowers, woven into Midsummer night wreaths, the traditions of cheese making will be passed over by wise wives of More and rituals – led by folk-group “Silavoti”. The sun MORNIG comes year after year, turning into a RITUAL that cleanses, gives strength and casts strong footbridges from the past to the future.

 

* “The Ball of Flowers in Riga 2014”

Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia (10 – 13 July)

The Ball of Flowers is the largest, the most diverse and the most widely attended flower and decorative plant show in Latvia and the Baltic States. This event holds sway as the highlight of the year for many inhabitants and guests of the capital – for everyone interested in flowers and decorative flora, everyone, who values well maintained surroundings, luscious gardens and simply enjoys the beauty of flowers. Alongside the wonder of bloom, concerts, supported by the university and many different artists, will be held as well.

* The Ancient Bonfire Night

Vakarbuļļi beach, 30 August

Foundation “Riga 2014” invites the people, who live along the coast of Latvia to light up bonfires on the Vakarbuļļi beach. The campaign is aimed at drawing attention to environment quality and the saving natural resources for future generations. Different artists and scientists will join the public in this initiative.
