The Premiere of the Documentary Film “Territory. Vija Celmins”
The documentary focuses on Latvian-American painter and graphic artist Vija Celmins, who has become one of the most prominent American hyperrealism artists and earned worldwide acclaim thanks to her signature style – depicting vast open spaces (the ocean, constellations, the desert). Works by Vija Celmins are held in some of the most significant contemporary art collections in the world, like, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, Centre Pompidou in Paris.
The documentary film “Territory. Vija Celmins” will, for the first time, show the general public the artist’s creative process and unique personality. The film crew visited Vija Celmins in New York and Long Island, where the guests from Latvia had the exclusive opportunity to not only see the artist at work but also meet with her associates and experience artistic life in New York. A few excerpts from the film have become part of Vija Celmins’ solo exhibition “Double Reality”, which will be on show at the Art Museum “Riga Bourse” from the 12th of April to the 22nd of June.
