Culture Chalet “Esplanade 2014” Opens
The culture chalet is a lounge where any Rigan or guest of Riga can take part in the various “Riga 2014” events. The culture chalet will open with the Belgian-French choreographic performance “Bal Moderne” on the 29th of April at 7 p.m.
Throughout the summer, the “Esplanade 2014” will be open on a daily basis; the first week features such events as the “Tweed Run”, street callisthenics displays, and film screenings.
On Thursday, the 1st of May, the culture chalet will host a ceremony marking the 10th anniversary since Latvia’s accession to the European Union.
The “Esplanade 2014” is a place where any visitor can find something interesting to do and where everybody is welcome. The summer culture programme will have a programme with every week dedicated to a particular theme. The theme for the first week is “Movement”, which stands for the culture chalet moving back to the Esplanade, healthy lifestyle and athletic activities. The theme for the second week’s programme will be “History”.
There will be a “Riga 2014” information stand at the Esplanade, a café selling “Laima” confectionery and the most popular Latvian ice-cream “Ekselence”, a souvenir shop, a green terrace, and wi-fi Internet – courtesy of “Riga 2014” co-operation partner “Lattelecom”.
In the evenings, the culture chalet will host musical conversations “You and Now at the Esplanade”, each featuring a meeting with a notable personality and conversations about various subjects and developments through the prism of culture. The music for each such event will be chosen by the “evening’s person” who will also have to comment on his or her choice of music for the night.
On Wednesday, the Esplanade programme will feature performances by deejays representing various music styles.
Saturdays, as usual, will be film nights. In co-operation with “Lattelecom”, the Saturday night film screenings will each present a selection of critically-acclaimed European films.
Sundays will be family days, with creative, entertaining and educational activities for children and their parents alike. Several Sunday family days will feature the Safety School, organised in collaboration with the ERGO insurance company, where various games will be held to teach children about safe pedestrian practices, road signs and the basic road traffic principles.
The “Esplanade 2014” will also run special programmes at the largest cultural developments this summer, including the World Choir Games from the 9th to the 19th of July, the international street art and world music festival “Re Re Riga” from the 9th to the 11th of August, and others. Volunteers are welcome to get involved in the culture chalet’s work to help with the organisation of the Esplanade events and tell visitors about the “Riga 2014” Programme.
The “Esplanade 2014” will be open every day from the 29th of April to the 5th of October 12 noon to 8:14 p.m. (or until the closing event ends). All events hosted by the culture chalet are free of charge.
