BBC’s Peter Maniura to Oversee Live Broadcast of “Born in Riga” Concert
“The concert “Born in Riga”, which will bring together our greatest music stars in Riga, the European Capital of Culture, is an ideal way to increase the profile of Riga and Latvia in Europe. We want the concert to be broadcast on television in many European countries, therefore we are pleased that the project will be run by the best of the best,” emphasises Diāna Čivle, the Head of the “Riga 2014” foundation.
“Considering that recording “Born in Riga” requires high artistic quality, an outstanding professional, BBC director and producer Peter Maniura has been engaged for the job of directing the live broadcast. This is the one time when a live broadcast of an international concert featuring the greatest Latvian music stars can be organised from Riga, the European Capital of Culture in 2014,” commented Ieva Rozentāle, Chief Editor of LTV culture programmes.
Peter Maniura has been working in various film and television genres as a director, multi-camera director and producer. Many of his works have received various awards, including the Emmy and Bafta awards. Since 2013 Maniura is also member of the “Opera North” board. Under the auspices of BBC, Peter Maniura in 2012 started to work on the development of a new innovative art and music digital platform, “The Space”. Before that, he was the Head of Television Classical Music and Performance at BBC.
The “Born in Riga” concert will feature world-famous Latvian music stars performing in one of the most beautiful locations of the city – near the Latvian National Opera building. Some of the most prominent Latvian musicians are set to participate in the concert: Maija Kovaļevska, Inese Galante, Aleksandrs Antoņenko, Egils Siliņš, Gidon Kremer, Mischa Maisky, Raimonds Pauls, Baiba Skride, Vestards Šimkus, Iveta Apkalna, Ksenija Sidorova, conductors Andris Poga, Māris Sirmais, the Latvian Radio Choir, State Choir “Latvija”, orchestra “Kremerata Baltica” and other outstanding Latvian musicians who are popular worldwide.
The visual concept of the “Born in Riga” television recording will be similar to that of the Vienna Philharmonic concerts at Schönbrunn, which show the concert itself, the city, the environment, people in the audience by using recording equipment located in a large area around the venue. Therefore the “Born in Riga” concert will also emphasise the atmosphere in the audience, showcase Riga architecture, and present a beautiful picture of the city and the concert.
The project is organised in co-operation with the “Riga 2014” foundation, Latvian Radio and the Latvian National Opera. The concert will be held on the 6th of July at 10 p.m.
