Morten Lauridsen’s Music at a Concert Presenting the World Choir Games
Ahead of the 8th World Choir Games, attended by 20,000 participants from sixty countries in Riga from the 9th of July to the 19th of July, the Riga chamber choir “Ave Sol” and its chief conductor Andris Veismanis, in collaboration with the World Choir Games’ Artistic Director Romāns Vanags, are inviting the public to a retrospective concert at the University of Latvia’s Great Hall on the 15th of May at 7 p.m. – “O Magnum Mysterium”.
The concert programme includes music by the Honorary Artistic President of the World Choir Games, American composer Morten Lauridsen (1943). Performing together with the chamber choir “Ave Sol” will be the Boys’ Choir of the Jāzeps Mediņš 1st Music School of Riga, pianist Agnese Egliņa and organist Tālivaldis Deksnis. Excerpts from Michael Stillwater’s film about Lauridsen, “Shining Night”, will be screened during the intermissions. Musicologist Orests Silabriedis will be the host of the concert.
Conductor Romāns Vanags: “Lauridsen’s music has established itself in contemporary vocal music repertoire. At the moment, he is the most performed American choir music composer. Taking into consideration his close association with the World Choir Games, we wanted to give Latvian listeners the opportunity to enjoy the mystical charm of Lauridsen’s music in advance”
Morten Lauridsen has been nominated for the prestigious Grammy award five times; his works have been released in over 200 recordings, earning him various awards. Lauridsen will visit Riga as it hosts the World Choir games to give master classes, perform together with the chamber choir “Ave Sol” in the World Choir Games’ Stars Concert on the 17th of July, and perform his “Lux Eterna” during the World Choir Games’ concert of the Baltic boys’ choirs at the Great Guild Hall on the 14th of July together with the Boys’ Choir of the Jāzeps Mediņš 1st Music School of Riga, the Riga Dom Boys’ Choir and boys’ choirs from Lithuania and Estonia.
