Art Academy Designers’ Graduation Show “Thought and Done”

The annual Design Graduates’ Days at the Art Academy of Latvia get under way on the 5th of June at 5 p.m. as part of the “Riga 2014” Programme.

This year, the title for the Design Graduates’ Days is “Thought and Done”, with the focus on design thinking that is based on creativity and inspiration, research and experiments.

This year’s programme of “Thought and Done” features a variety of events: diploma works of the young designers about to graduate from the Art Academy, fashion shows at St. Peter’s Church, a pop-up design shop, the “Experience Day” with guest lectures by internationally renowned design professionals and PechaKucha presentations, and other activities. All the events are organised by the soon-to-be graduates of the Design School of the Art Academy of Latvia and the Department of Functional Design Professor Holgers Elers.

The exhibition “Thought and Done” will be on display on the ground floor of the Art Academy of Latvia from the 6th of June to the 11th of July, showcasing a total of 57 works of graduates from the academy’s departments of functional design, environmental art, metal design, and fashion design.

The “Experience Day” on the 16th of June will feature presentations of the Art Academy graduates during the “Morning of Design Communications”, followed by the opening of a pop-up design shop at 1 p.m., where students’ works will be available for purchase.

Internationally-acclaimed designers Dirk Wynants, Christian Sieger, Patricia Urquiola and Alberto Zontone will read guest lectures in the afternoon. The PechaKucha night will begin at 7 p.m., featuring seven-minute presentations by students from the Art Academy of Latvia, Riga Technical University and RISEBA.  

The annual Designers’ Graduation Days, first held in 2007, are organised by the Design School of the Art Academy of Latvia, established in 1962. The Design School has four departments: Department of Functional Design, Department of Environmental Art, Department of Metal Design, and Department of Fashion Design, where a total of 214 students study for their bachelor and master’s degrees. The Designers’ Graduation Days are organised in partnership with the BA School of Business and Finance.

The “Thought and Done” exhibition’s opening hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., lunch break from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Closed on Sunday and Monday.

The exhibition will also be closed on the 24th and 25th of June.
