Director Peter Maniura Joins Creative Team for the “Born in Riga” Concert

The acclaimed BBC television director, Vice-President of the European Broadcasting Union’s Music and Dance Experts Group Peter Maniura (Great Britain) arrived in Riga on the 9th of June to oversee the international live broadcast of the “Born in Riga” concert. The unique “Born in Riga” project brings together the greatest contemporary musicians who hail from Riga. The concert will be broadcast live on television across Europe.

The renowned television director Peter Maniura is in Latvia to oversee the international live broadcast of the classical music concert “Born in Riga”, one of the most important events on the “Riga 2014” Programme. This is the first time that a cultural event of such magnitude is aired live by not only the Latvian Television, but also by the European culture channel “ARTE” and other European televisions. The visual concept of the “Born in Riga” television recording will be similar to that of the Vienna Philharmonic concerts at Schönbrunn, showcasing Riga architecture, emphasising the atmosphere in the audience, and presenting a beautiful picture of the city.

Peter Maniura is known for a number of impressive projects, for example, he was in charge of the live broadcast of the Queen Elizabeth II jubilee concert in London. Many of his works have received various awards, including the Emmy and Bafta awards. Since 2013 Maniura is also member of the “Opera North” board. Under the auspices of BBC, Peter Maniura in 2012 started to work on the development of a new innovative art and music digital platform, “The Space”. Before that, he was the Head of Television Classical Music and Performance at BBC.

The “Born in Riga” concert will feature Maija Kovaļevska, Inese Galante, Aleksandrs Antoņenko, Egils Siliņš, Mischa Maisky, Baiba Skride, Iveta Apkalna, Vestards Šimkus, Raimonds Pauls and Laima Jansone, the Latvian Radio Choir, State Choir “Latvija” and conductor Māris Sirmais, chamber orchestra “Kremerata Baltica”, and an orchestra set up specifically for the “Born in Riga” project, comprised of the best orchestra musicians in Latvia and beyond, which will be conducted by Andris Poga. The idea of the “Born in Riga” concert was proposed by Daina Markova. Stage director - Dāvis Sīmanis, set design by Aigars Ozoliņš.    

Tickets to the 6th of July concert cost EUR 10 to EUR 100 at the moment, the tickets are available from the “Biļešu Serviss” outlets and at the Riga 2014 culture chalet “Esplanade 2014”.

The live broadcast of the concert is being organised in collaboration with the “Riga 2014” foundation, the Latvian Radio, and the Latvian National Opera.
