The 22nd International Sigulda Opera Music Festival will run from the 1st to the 3rd of August at the Sigulda Castle Ruins stage, presenting the public a selection of some of the best contemporary opera performers.

The festival in Sigulda will feature performances by internationally-acclaimed opera stars. According to the festival’s organisers, over EUR 70,000 will be paid in fees to the singers. Part of the amount, EUR 23,272  has been allotted by the Ministry of Culture in recognition of Sigulda as the official partner city of Riga, the European Capital of Culture 2014.

At the beginning of August the picturesque Sigulda Castle Ruins will become the venue for an outstanding musical event – the 22nd International Sigulda Opera Music Festival. Tickets to the Opera Music Festival’s opening concert “From Latvian to World Classics”, performance for children “Dream Horse”, an original open-air production of “Carmen” and the festival’s Gala Concert have been available since the beginning of the year.

It is noteworthy that three French soloists will perform the main roles in the original open-air production of Georges Bizet’s “Carmen” at the Sigulda Opera Music Festival on the 2nd of August: Clémentine Margaine as Carmen, Philippe Do as Don José, and Pierre-Yves Pruvot as Escamillo. Latvian Soprano Maija Kovaļevska will star in the role of Micaëla. Supporting roles will be sung by Latvian opera singers Kristīne Gailīte, Olga Jakovļeva, Juris Ādamsons, Andris Lapiņš, Krišjānis Norvelis and Kalvis Kalniņš. The production is directed by Edmunds Freibergs. Also participating in the performance will be the festival’s orchestra and choir, and conductor Vladimir Kiradjiev.

“Every time some of our world-popular soloists perform in Latvia, it’s a very special event. I couldn’t even wish for a better line-up for the original production of Bizet’s “Carmen”. Maija Kovaļevska, who is currently the world’s best performer of Micaëla, is a real godsend. The production of “Carmen” in Sigulda will be notable for an unprecedented phenomenon – three French opera singers performing the main roles. I believe that music by French composers can be truly enjoyed and inspire the listeners only if performed by quality French soloists,” said the Opera Music Festival’s Artistic Director Dainis Kalns.

The festival’s Gala Concert will be on the 3rd of August at 5 p.m. “The magnificent – some would say luxurious - assembly of outstanding soloists at the Gala Concert will feature two acclaimed baritones, Pierre-Yves Pruvot (France) and Vittorio Vitelli (Italy) who, according to their colleagues, have phenomenal voices. Also performing in the concert will be the brilliant Georgian soprano Iano Tamar and the in-demand tenor Philippe Do (France). The world’s most sought-after tenor Marcelo Álvarez (Argentina) will be the Gala Concert’s special guest. Only three artists of such calibre have performed in Latvia to date: Feodor Chaliapin, Jussi Björling and Anna Netrebko. The concert will also showcase our talented soloists Krišjānis Norvelis, Rihards Mačanovskis, Olga Jakovļeva, Dināra Rudāne, as well as the festival’s orchestra and choir, conducted by Vladimir Kiradjiev,” said Dainis Kalns.

Tickets to the Sigulda Opera Music Festival events are available from “Biļešu paradīze” outlets.

The 22nd International Sigulda Opera Music Festival is organised by the Sigulda Region Council and the festival’s Artistic Director Dainis Kalns. The festival is part of the “Riga 2014” Programme.
