Exhibition “Riga Self | Portraits” to Open at Tabakas Fabrika
Participants in the project “Riga Self | Portraits” are more than 500 Riga residents and acclaimed professional photographers, presenting portraits of contemporary Rigans created in collaboration with artists.
The project offers a combination of contemporary art and participation of the public, revealing the character of the present-day Riga. The authors are Rigans themselves – hundreds of residents from Ķengarags, Jugla, Torņkalns, Bolderāja and other neighbourhoods of Riga, who have created their self-portraits at creative workshops, collaborating with local and foreign artists. On the other hand, popular Latvian photographers, including Iveta Vaivode, Andrejs Strokins, Kaspars Goba, Andris Kozlovskis and Aija Bley, have created series of portraits and multimedia works where Rigans play the main role. The exhibition also presents Rigans’ portraits that the Argentine photographer Marcos López created in Riga this past spring in his unique Pop Latino style.
The project involves residents from various neighbourhoods, generations and ethnicities of Riga, giving them a chance to learn more about each other and appreciate the vibrant diversity of the city.
The works show Pārdaugavas teenagers in their neighbourhoods, members of the Bolderāja Azerbaijani community gone on an outing, clay self-portraits of residents of the village for the visually-impaired in Jugla, sailors, colourful Rigans “caught” at the photo booth at the Riga Bus Terminal, and much more.
The exhibition “Riga Self | Portraits” will open at “Tabakas fabrika”, Miera iela 58, on the 3rd of July at 6 p.m. Opening hours – from 12 noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday. Admission free of charge.
The exhibition will also include creative workshops and events offering any visitor to create his or her self-portrait. Many works of the “Riga Self | Portraits” will also be on show at public transport stops throughout the city.
