This weekend, on the 5th and 6th of July, Riga will host a major international festival of military bands, bringing together orchestras of the Dutch, German, U.S., Georgian, Norwegian and Latvian Armed Forces.

The festival marking the 95th anniversary of the National Armed Forces of Latvia is organised by the “Riga 2014” foundation and the Ministry of Defence. All concerts of the festival are free of charge.

At a time the practical importance of military bands has changed, they still remain a symbol of power and demonstrate the close relationship between freedom, power and culture. The festival’s programme for the 5th of July includes a parade through Riga’s Old Town and the festival’s opening concert at the Freedom Monument.

On the 6th of July, the orchestras will perform in concerts at the culture chalet “Esplanade 2014”, Riga Railway Station Square near the “Origo” shopping mall, and in Sigulda, Jelgava and Ogre. The festival’s gala concert will be in the Ķīpsala Hall on the 6th of July, free invitations to the concert are available from the culture chalet “Esplanade 2014”.

Festival participants: Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces, Orchestra of the National Reserve of the Royal Netherlands Army, Orchestra of the Neubrandenburg Land Forces of the Bundeswehr, Central Orchestra of the Georgian Armed Forces, U.S. Army Europe Band, as well as the Home Guard Orchestra and the Staff Orchestra of the National Armed Forces. In the festival’s closing concert in Ķīpsala Hall on the 6th of July, they will also be joined by the National Armed Forces’ Big Band, men’s choirs “Gaudeamus” and “Frachori”, and the Armed Forces’ dance group “Bramaņi”.

7.30 p.m. Military bands’ parade through the Old Town from Pils Square to the Freedom Monument

8 p.m. The festival’s opening concert at the Freedom Monument

8.30 p.m. National Armed Forces’ Big Band performs a concert at the culture chalet “Esplanade 2014”

Sunday, 6th of July

11 a.m. A concert by the Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces in the garden of Sigulda New Castle

12 noon Orchestra of the Neubrandenburg Land Forces of the Bundeswehr in concert at the Ogre Culture Centre

12 noon Orchestra of the National Reserve of the Royal Netherlands Army gives concert at the Jelgava Culture Centre

12 noon The Central Orchestra of the Georgian Armed Forces performs at the “Origo” shopping centre at Riga Central Railway Station Square

2.30 p.m. U.S. Army Europe Band performs a concert at the culture chalet “Esplanade 2014”

5 p.m. The closing concert of the festival at Ķīpsala Hall

The European Capital of Culture Programme of Riga is prepared and run by the foundation “Riga 2014” in collaboration with state, municipal and non-governmental cultural organisations and creative associations. The Programme is financed by the Riga City Council, Ministry of Culture and the European Commission, and offered to the public in partnership with “Lattelecom”, which also provides technical support for the Programme.
