Crafts Fair and World Choir Games Concerts in Vērmanes Park
More than 180 craftsmen, artisans, farmers and businessmen from Riga and Latvia’s regions participate in the “Made in Riga 2014” fair in Vērmanes Park in the centre of RIga.
Available at the fair are all kinds of products and goods by craftsmen and farmers: knitwear, wickerworks, ceramics, metal handicraft, textiles, glass products, authentic accessories, leather products and all kinds of mouth-watering products from Latvian farms. These include, to name but a few, home-made ice cream, fresh vegetables, meat, pies, wine and beer. The “Made in Riga 2014” fair in Vērmanes Park will be open every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Vērmanes Park will also host the daily Friendship Concerts of the World Choir Games.
Choirs from all over the world will participate in the concerts that will start at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. every day. The concerts in Vērmanes Park are free of charge, as are Friendship Concerts at the Esplanade, the “Origo” open-air stage, and in the Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia. A full programme of the World Choir Games is available on the website singriga.lv.
The World Choir Games is the largest choir music festival in the world. From the 9th to the 19th of July, 460 choirs from 73 countries on five continents, or a total of 27,000 choir singers, will be participating in friendly competition to acknowledge the importance of singing together. For ten days, competitions in 29 categories will be held in Riga, as well as master classes and seminars, special concerts and Friendship Concerts, the Parade of Nations and much, much more. The biennial World Choir Games have been organised since 2000.
The World Choir Games in Riga are organised by the “Riga 2014” foundation in co-operation with the German cultural organisation “Interkultur”.
“Lattelecom”, the official partner of the “Riga 2014” Programme, ensures technological support for the “Riga 2014” events, including free WiFi. The technologies offered by “Lattelecom” make it possible to bring cultural values to the general public and to involve everyone in the unique cultural life of the city. There are almost 1,000 free WiFi zones in Riga, making the city Europe’s free WiFi capital. Additional WiFi zones have been set up at the World Choir Games concert venues for the convenience of participants in the event – near the Vērmanes Park’s stage, Olympic Sports Centre, Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, the Great Guild Hall, and, for the Great Celebration Concert on the 13th of July, at the Mežaparks Open-Air Stage.
Whereas ERGO, the official insurer of the European Capital of Culture events, provides event cancellation insurance for the World Choir Games concerts. This is a novelty for Latvia, and is meant to ensure that the concert goers, performers and organisers may feel safe for their investment and contribution, and enjoy the occasion without worrying about bad weather or any other disturbances.
“Audi” and “Volkswagen” provide transport services for the “Riga 2014” and the World Choir Games organisers.
