Until the 24th of July, Sigulda hosts the second summer school for young professional singers as part of the “Riga 2014” Programme. The TENSO Europe Chamber Choir (TECC) is a long-term education project for young singers that started in Latvia in 2013. Following the ten-day summer school, the choir will perform two concerts: in Sigulda Evangelical Lutheran Church at 7 p.m. on the 23rd of July and in Riga St. John’s Church at 8 p.m. on the 24th of July.

This high-profile “Riga 2014” project has put Riga on the map of Europe as a centre for contemporary vocal music, a city where music innovation meets young professionals, encouraging new experiments and reaching out for new concepts in music.

This summer, the TECC is made up of 24 young and talented singers from ten European countries, including Latvia, some of which participated in the project in 2013. The initiator of the project is the Latvian Radio Choir Conductor Kaspars Putniņš, and the project aims to create a platform for practical education of young professionals interested in singing in a choir or ensemble. At the summer school, TENSO choristers have the opportunity to learn the art of singing in an ensemble based on the extensive experience of the Latvian Radio Choir’s professional performances.

This year, the “Baltais flīģelis” concert hall in Sigulda is the host for the summer school. Besides the concerts in Latvia, the Europe Chamber Choir will also perform in Lochem (Netherlands) on the 22nd of August, Helsinki (Finland) on the 23rd of August, Tallinn (Estonia) on the 24th of August. For the concert programme, conductor Kaspars Putniņš has selected works by William Byrd, Felix Mendelssohn, Richard Wagner, Max Reger, Jean-Yves Daniel-Lesur, Arvo Pärt, Folke Rabe and Gundega Šmite.

TENSO is the European network for professional chamber choirs, where the joint efforts and achievements of the most prominent European chamber choirs are combined and disseminated within the context of a growing European network. The Latvian Radio Choir is one of the four original founders of TENSO. The TENSO Europe Chamber Choir aims to bring together young professional singers from all over Europe for a summer of coaching and performances, creating a link between young singers and professionalism, and providing them with a valuable experience of what it is like to be part of a professional vocal ensemble.

Participants in the TECC summer school also work on the production of composer Kristaps Pētersons’ performance “Brightness. The Series”, which, staged by Director Zane Kreicberga and Conductor Kaspars Putniņš, will have its premiere during the TENSO Days concerts in Riga on the 17th and 18th of October.
