A tender for projects and events in Riga’s surrounding districts has been announced for the program of European Capital of Culture. Foundation 'Riga 2014' invites cultural organizers and activists to create events with inhabitants of Riga taking the central part and with ideas emphasizing uniqueness of each environ.

Curator of thematic  line ‘Road Map’ in 'Riga 2014' program Gundega Laiviņa hopes that ‘as many neighborhoods of the town as possible will be prominent in activities throughout entire year of European Capital of Culture program, if for a while, turning districts from Purvciems to Zolitūde and from Sarkandaugava to Torņakalns into centers of culture.’

Ideas especially awaited are ones with the potential to continue after 2014, to turn Riga into a town with many active cultural centers in the long term, where, both, free access to culture and opportunities of active participation in its production are enabled.

Bodies, invited to apply for the tender of neighborhood cultural projects and events are civic associations of neighborhoods or other groups, which are already actively involved in neighborhood development. The limit of support per project is 3000 lats.

This call for applications extends until June 11, 2013, referred to the office of 'Riga 2014.' The provisions of the tender are found here.

Altogether, more than two hundred events, diversely ranging in the genres of culture and art, are planned for the year of European Capital of Culture in Riga. European Capitals of Culture have been titled already since 1985, and this EC initiative has turned into a strong development impulse for the cities selected. Parallel to Riga, European Capital of Culture 2014 will be Umea in Sweden. Program of European Capital of Culture is available in portal
