Concert by “Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra” and “Sinfonietta Rīga”
The joint performance by the two contemporary music ensembles from Riga and Berlin will be an important event in the cultural life of Riga and further consolidate the reputation of Riga as the European Capital of Culture.
Marking the 2014 European Capital of Culture year in Riga, the Goethe Institute, in co-operation with the Federal Foreign Office of Germany and the Senate of Berlin, initiated the collaboration of “Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra” from Berlin and “Sinfonietta Rīga”. During the concert on the 26th of September, the two orchestras – forty musicians in total – will perform new compositions by Daniel Gletzel, the head of the Berlin orchestra.
“Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra” does not fit into the classical music, jazz or popular music genres. It is a cross-genre ensemble playing music of various styles. Ever since its foundation in 2006, the ensemble, led by Daniel Gletzel, has been playing non-traditional music compositions.
On the other hand, chamber orchestra “Sinfonietta Rīga”, conducted by Normunda Šnē, has performed various music, from baroque to contemporary music, to great acclaim. The ensemble is known for its experiments in classical and non-classical music, and currently participates in the pan-European culture project “New Music - New Audiences”.
Following “Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra’s” guest performance in November 2013 and chamber orchestra “Sinfonietta Rīga’s master classes with Daniel Gletzel’s draft compositions, the composer was commissioned by the Goethe Institute in Riga to write new compositions specifically for the new joint orchestra.
The concert at the “Riga” concert hall of the Latvian Academy of Sciences on the 26th of September will be preceded by five days of intensive joint rehearsals led by Daniela Gletzel and the concert’s conductor Normunda Šnē.
The programme of the joint performance of “Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra” and “Sinfonietta Rīga” includes new compositions that “Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra” leader, multi-instrumentalist Daniel Gletzel has composed specifically for the concert.
The concert is organised and supported by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany and the Senate of Berlin in co-operation with the “Riga 2014” foundation.
