Events Marking Rothko’s 111th Birthday to Open with an Exhibition
During the opening of the exhibition, further information will be presented about the events dedicated to Rothko that will be taking place in Riga and Daugavpils for the next two weeks.
The project “Rothko Train from Riga to Daugavpils”, part of the “Riga 2014” Programme, is one of the multiple events celebrating the 111th birthday of Rothko in Riga and Daugavpils, another key event is the exhibition “Digital Phenomenon of Rothko” in the EU House (ground floor), on show from the 15th to 30th of September.
The exhibition in the EU House will be a dynamic video projection on several screens, stylistically reminiscent of the projections in the digital exhibition at the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre. The exhibition is structured in accordance with the various periods in Mark Rothko’s creative life: the realism period, the surrealist period, the multiform period, the classical period, and the dark period.
The exhibition presents, via dynamic collages, visual information about the life and art of Mark Rothko – photo materials showing the artist in various stages in his life or demonstrate social or political processes that had an impact on the artist’s work; reproductions of Rothko’s paintings, brief textual information.
Visitors to the exhibition will be offered to watch a ten-minute story about the famous artist, thereby building a symbolic bridge between Riga and Daugavpils.
