International Conference Devoted to Mark Rothko. Live Stream
Participants in the conference include acclaimed art critics and artists inspired by Mark Rothko – from Paris, New York, London, Madrid, and São Paulo. During the conference in Riga and Daugavpils, several concerts and performances will take place, as well as book presentations and exhibitions.
Minister of Culture of the Republic of Latvia Dace Melbārde will address the conference participants on the 23rd of September, and the conference will open with a lecture by Mark Rothko’s Son, Christopher Rothko (New York). Other speakers at the conference include Prof. Paul Huxley (London), the leading Mark Rothko researcher, British art historian Dr. David Anfam (London), 360 degree abstract painting expert and colour perception psychology researcher Prof. Sanford Wurmfeld (New York), Prof. Marco Gianotti (São Paulo), and the French academician Dr. Annie Cohen-Solal (Paris). Later on, presentation of the Latvian translation of her book about Mark Rothko will be held.
In the evening of the 23rd of September, a chamber orchestra made up of the best Latvian musicians and conducted by Mārtiņš Ozoliņš will perform English composer James Clarke’s opuses Untitled No. 1 and a new composition – 2014-N, written specifically for this event.
On the 25th of September, the conference “Abstract Expressionism: The Language of Emotions” will continue at the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre.
The Daugavpils-born Eleonora Šturma (New York) will read a lecture about Edvīns Strautmanis, Austrian architect Prof. Walter Unterrainer will give a talk about museums and architects, musician and artist Prof. James Clarke (London), whose concert will close the conference in Riga, will talk about abstract expressionism in music and art, there will also be performances by Dr. José M.Ciria (Madrid/London) and British artist Peter Griffin (London). The official presentation of the Latvian translation of the book “Mark Rothko. A Biography” by James E. B. Breslin will also be held during the conference in Daugavpils.
At the end of the conference in Daugavpils, several new exhibitions will mark the start of the autumn season at the Mark Rothko Centre. The exhibition “Contemporary Painting of Latvia” will present works by seven Latvian painters – Sigita Daugule, Jānis Dukāts, Andris Eglītis, Daiga Krūze, Viktorija Valujeva, Andris Vītoliņš and Otto Zitmanis. In addition, works of Irish painter Kristina Huxley will also be on display, as well as an exhibition of British artist Peter Griffin, and the final exhibition of the international residency “Mark Rothko 2014” will open.
The conference in Daugavpils will close at 5 p.m. with the concert “Russian Avant-Garde Music” where compositions by Samuil Feinberg and Anatoly Alexandrov will be performed by Darya Beskina (vocals) and Viktor Bunin (piano).
