In the range of European Capital of Culture program events, professional brass orchestra ‘Rīga’ will present program dedicated to Johann Sebastian Bach on March 31, 2014, titled, yet inconclusively, ‘Bach’s 329th anniversary.’ Ideas have been finished to select at the moment for commissions of transcriptions of Bach’s compositions, representatives of ‘Rīga’ inform cultural portal 'Riga 2014.'

Selection of propositions was organized with the view on assembling the concert program. Three competent experts – artistic director of progfessional BO ‘Rīga’ Mārtiņš Ozoliņš, musicologist Arnolds Klotiņš and composer, lecturer of Latvia State Conservatoire Rolands Kronlaks – formed the commission for selections.

Six of the propositions entered for selection will be realized: Laura Gustovska’s idea of a contemporary version of Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, Sabīne Ķezbere’s fantasy on Prelude in B flat from Well Tempered Clavier, Vilnis Šmīdbergs’ idea to arrange Bach’s famous Concert for piano and orchestra in D minor for brass orchestra as a concert piece.

The program of the concert will also include submission of Leons Amoliņš ‘Challenge to Dance’ (“Izaicinājums uz deju”), Valdis Zilveris’ idea to arrange popular Toccata and fugue in D minor adding jazz elements and variations of well-known piano miniature ‘Musette’ from Anna Magdalene Bach’s Music book, proposed by Jēkabs Nīmanis.

Authors whose ideas found support of the jury, will be offered commission contracts for their realization.

Organizers of selection wish to thank all the composers who had entered their propositions! Representatives of BO ‘Rīga’ emphasize that call for international composers’ competition ‘Windstream’ is still open till August 30, 2013.
