Ziemošanās – an outdoor carnival for the whole family
Everyone coming to the 16 February hullabaloo is invited to let their imagination run wild and turn up in a mask or costume as a Rīga symbol – to become either Lielais Kristaps, a Rīga Canal duck, rooftop Melnais kaķis (Black cat), a Doms cathedral mouse or other eye-catching symbol. Visitors will be able to create their own masks at special workshops at Bastejkalns, in turn, the best masks and costumes will be awarded surprise prizes.
To prepare for the Rīga Ziemošanās event, everyone is invited to send in their versions of Rīga’s best-loved symbols, or to vote for those already submitted.
Vote for your favourite Rīga Ziemošanās symbols at http://riga2014.org/ziemosanas2013
The voting results will select the most popular traditional symbols of Rīga’s winter and welcome new ideas for vibrant city symbols and legends. The most popular Rīga symbols will become attractions at the Bastejkalns festivities. Carnival-goers will still be able to vote for their favourite symbol on 16 February, during the event at Bastejkalns, as Lattelecom will be providing free Wi-Fi.
“Rīga Ziemošanās is a new event on Rīga’s cultural map, with the potential to become an annual occasion, giving Rīga residents and visitors an opportunity for outdoor entertainment in a joyful and carnival atmosphere in the winter too. Next year’s version of this winter event is planned to be especially colourful, with Rīga being a 2014 European Capital of Culture” said Diāna Čivle, Director of the Rīga 2014 Foundation and Curator of European Capital of Culture programme chapter Rīga Carnival.
Rīga Ziemošanās 2013 is being organised by Ideju institūts, together with Rīga 2014 and Key Partner Lattelecom, and is one of the European Capital of Culture programme events.
