Culture summer house in the city centre. "Esplanāde 2014" is open
Concerts, discussions, performances and shows will go on to the middle of September in this unique, transparent building constructed by architect Austris Mailītis. Cafe and reading-room of National Library of Latvia will be available.
We are especially glad about the work of Dace Vilsone, "Rīga 2014" project manager. She upgraded a Green terrace with her homegrown tomatoes the night before opening. Also some salad and blossoming "mates" given by University Botanic Garden are now placed in the terrace, so everyone can take a moment to rest in there.
"Of course, this is only the starting point. We have to adapt to this environment. The park surrounding the space is inspiring, but we have to learn working and resting at the same time," says Dace Vilsone to her colleagues and Riga residents.
"I'd like to enjoy watching films at the park. Saturdays and Wednesdays are booked for European and Latvian movie nights. We also have Friday music nights, that could be an alternative to our Riga music clubs, as well," tells project manager of "Rīga 2014". She also adds that "Esplanāde 2014" is going to be a place with its own unique content. Besides, people are able to spend the time in there when no event really happens. World news is available by using "Lattelecom" wi-fi free of charge together with the collection of books from National Library. "So you can finally read Rainis below his feet," smiles Vilsone.
Meantime, a registration of "Chain of Booklovers" has started. It's a symbolic campaign of bringing books from former National Library to "Gaismas Pils" ("Castle of Light") starting on 18 January, 2014. So this is going to be one of introducing events of The European Capital of Culture.
"Chain of Booklovers" registration was opened by a symbolic, so called domino effect made from books. Thus, 2014 books were brought in a row next to the monument to Rainis. The first registered were Mayor of Riga Nils Ušakovs and Vice Mayor Andris Ameriks, Diāna Čivle, head of "Rīga 2014" and "Lattelecom" chairman of the board Juris Gulbis.
When the official part was over, Deniss Paškevičs and Jolanta Gulbe-Paškeviča performed in a summer mood at the park. Also an orchestra from Jāzeps Mediņš Music School took their part. A series of "Esplanāde 2014" concerts, in its turn, is revealed on this Friday, 28 June with "Dzelzs Vilks" gig. They have promised to play some of their new songs from an upcoming album.
It is also known that a studio from LTV will take place at "Esplanāde 2014" during the week of Song and Dance Festival. Then, big screens will be available for watching closing concert of the Festival.
