From Riga to Daugavpils – by Rothko’s Train

The Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will be marking the 111th anniversary of the outstanding painter Mark Rothko from the 23rd to 25th of September. The Centre will host the international conference “Abstract Expressionism: The Language of Emotions”, attended by world-renowned art researchers and Rothko-inspired artists from Paris, New York, London, Madrid, São Paulo and Moscow. 

On the 24th of September, the “Laboratory of Silence” train will depart from Riga for Daugavpils, where the passengers will have the opportunity to witness a multimedia Rothko drama, and experience the silence of sound. In the evening, the multimedia performance “Rothko Inspires” will take place in Daugavpils – a symbiosis of art, music and multimedia.

The conference “Abstract Expressionism: The Language of Emotions” will continue at the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre on the 25th of September, where the new autumn season exhibitions will open.

Project description:

To honor Mark Rothko’s 111th birthday in 2014, an international conference will bring prominent art scholars to Latvia, who will discuss the ground-breaking abstract expressionist’s contribution to art. The closing of the first day of the conference will see a concert of British artist and musician James Clarke in Riga. The digital exhibition „Rothko and Daugavpils” in the new building of the National Library will present the material of exposition prepared by the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Arts Center. In turn, on 25 September, the participants of the conference will take train to go to Daugavpils Mark Rothko Arts Center.
