For Latvians, going to the sauna has been integral part of the summer solstice celebrations since ancient times. During the summer solstice celebrations in Mežaparks on the 21st and 22nd of June, “Riga 2014 Solstice” will bring the public the “Līgo Sauna Festival”, including a visit to a traditional Latvian bathhouse with professional sauna attendants.
“The ancient Latvians believed the bathhouse to be a sacred place, as even Māra and Laima, two key Latvian goddesses, were regular sauna visitors. The bathhouse was also the place where the most important events took place, for example, this is where children were born. Healing rituals were held in the sauna, people bathed there on a weekly basis, and bathhouses were also used for various other purposes,” says the certified sauna attendant the head of the Practical Sauna School, Romualds Lamsters. On the most powerful days of the year – during the summer solstice – the “Riga 2014 Solstice” events in Mežaparks will present an opportunity to every visitor to go to all kinds of saunas, have various massages, participate in a workshop making birch bunches, learn valuable information about healthy lifestyle and the important role of the sauna, attend various master classes and watch all kinds of performances. They will also have the opportunity to purchase various sauna products, from birch bunches to the traditional bath attendant’s attire. A visit to a sauna will be free of charge.
