The project is based on Suse Miessner’s mobile app “Urban Alphabets”, offering any smartphone user to go out in the city and find and take pictures of various letters they can spot in order to create own custom alphabet. The letters downloaded by every user of the app are collated in a joint database to create the alphabet of Riga. Users can also create custom postcards and send them to friends via social networks.
The event itself is built on the communication between event visitors in Riga and Berlin who send postcards to each other, which will be demonstrated on a large screen at the culture chalet “Esplanade 2014”. Any visitor to the event will have opportunity to send a letter to an event visitor in the “connected” city. Children will be able to play Scrabble using the urban alphabet of Riga. The event will run for two days from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.

In 2013 and 2014, the Connecting Cities Network projects in Riga take place as part of the “White Night” contemporary culture forum and “Staro Rīga” festival of light.
