Nobel prize winners in literature as well as the leading literary critics, writers, researchers, artists, publishers and new media experts will take part at the academic readings „21. gadsimta saturs”. The readings will be available face-to-face and online promoting Riga as „The European Capital of Idea”. Literature, history, sociology, book art, new media, education, traditions, etc. The date will be confirmed. On the 2nd of September, Andrew Pettegree will read lecture “The Renaissance Library and the Problem of Print” at the Latvian National Library, 11th floor. Andrew Pettegree is an internationally recognised authority on the history of the 16th century and the Reformation, who has done several pivotal researches on the development of the book as a medium at the end of the 15th century and 16th century. He is a Professor of Modern History at the University of St Andrews and Director of the Universal Short Title Catalogue – an online database of all books published in Europe between the invention of printing and the end of the 16th century. Academic readings 'Content of XXI Century' and exhibition ‘500 years of the Book 1514-2014’ will address the change in the habits of reading – from poring over manuscripts in 1514 to present day boom of the printed book – year 2014 and its forms of co-existence of printed and digital literature.
