RIXC, in collaboration with mathematician Daina Taimiņa (U.S./Latvia), network researcher Valdis Krebs (U.S./Latvia), Liepāja University’s Art Research Lab (LiepU MPLab), E-Lab, and a network of Latvian handicraft enthusiasts, present unique, analogue, crocheted 3D objects – hyperbolic planes. It is very difficult to describe hyperbolic planes found in nature (coral reefs, lettuce leaves, etc.) using mathematic formulae, therefore one of the best ways to show a hyperbolic plane is to crochet one. The project involved a number of Latvian crocheting enthusiasts who tried to use recyclable materials as much as possible, creating new a synergy between mathematics, science, culture and handicrafts.
