“Staro Rīga 2014” is part of the “Riga Carnival” thematic line of the “Riga 2014” Programme, therefore Riga Carnival is also the theme for this year’s festival. This year, in addition to large-scale objects created by professional artists, the “Staro Rīga 2014” festival will launch new programme to encourage participation of the public – “Paint Your Riga”, urging all – companies and residents of Riga – to make the Latvian capital city brighter during the dark period of the year by creating colourful installations and displaying them in windows. Rigans will use all kinds of techniques – paints, coloured masking tapes, light bulbs in various colours, LED lights, searchlights and other materials – to colour their homes and workplaces and make the festival cover all of the city.

During the Festival of Light, the European Capital of Culture will experience positive “force majeure”. “Staro Rīga”, which used to be an event of light, videos, and installations, will be different this year, becoming a platform for international and national multimedia light and technology art projects. The main exhibits at the festival will be video installations that have won international acclaim or were created specifically for the festival, as well as projections, mapping and light installations. “Staro Rīga 2014” will co-operate with the world’s greatest festivals of light and be involved in artist mobility programmes, making Riga a world of colourful lights and video installations during the dark November days.
